That being said, I was still somewhat skeptical, because I didn’t know what joining a sorority would entail. However, my fears were instantly replaced with assurance. I was welcomed and accepted by a plethora of kind, genuine, and unbelievably loving girls. They made me feel so special, important, and wanted, which is why I want to stress this statement: My experience in Greek life has wholeheartedly defied the stereotypes associated with sororities. I have personally debunked these stereotypes that skew the mindset of many people when it comes to joining a sorority and my evidence is as follows: You are surrounded by the most intelligent and intellectually stimulating people. Despite common misconceptions, there is substance within a sorority. What inevitably comes with a group of over one hundred women is a compilation of knowledge and skills. We discuss past tests and teachers, and there is an excessive amount of tools for you to thrive academically. These girls are undoubtedly your biggest fans–they are rooting for you and wanting you to succeed. They never hesitate to offer support and guidance, and willingly share their expertise. There is an abundance of love and support from your sisters. The acceptance you receive never ceases to amaze me. If faced with a sticky situation or in need of some support, you are backed by a group a people that are consistently on your side. They accept you for who you are, but encourage you to push yourself beyond the self-imposed limits that often hold us back. There is no uniform set of people. The social construct that sorority girls are spitting images of one another is a myth. I have never met such an interesting and diverse group of people before joining Gamma Phi Beta. It’s refreshing to be frequently greeted by so many different interests, talents, and hobbies. Differences are not only accepted, but encouraged. The uniqueness that each girl possesses is celebrated. Each person brings something new and compelling to the table, and this is one of my favorite qualities that I have found through joining a sorority. From Irish dancing to flawlessly reciting all of the elements of the periodic table, these girls never fail to fascinate me with their abilities. There is no peer pressure. Any choice made by a sister is respected. You are never made to feel like you are obligated to do something. You don’t have to do anything you don’t want to do, and that is made crystal clear. If you opt out of a party to study, not only is that normal, but its preferred. Gamma Phi Beta, in particular, insists that school always comes first. We don’t just aim to better our sorority, we aim to better the community. Of course, philanthropy is widely valued amongst sororities. Specifically, Gamma Phi Beta seeks to inspire the highest type of womanhood. We care about our reputation and want nothing more than to be taken seriously and regarded in a positive light. However, helping the community plays a huge factor within our sorority. We are constantly searching for ways to help other sororities and fraternities, and we frequently pair up with them to raise money for any given charity. Joining a sorority has done nothing but add color and light into my life. It has provided me with endless opportunities and has introduced me to some of the best people I’ve ever known. The stereotypes affiliated with sororities do not do Greek life justice. Greek life has given me a new reason to better myself and better the lives of those around me. So, please, do not let the stereotypes of sororities discourage you. I promise, you won’t regret it. "From the outside looking in, you can never understand it. From the inside looking out, you can never explain it."
